The 3-Step "Fake Hypoallergenic" Test

"Hypoallergenic" is a marketing word, not a standard. Nobody has to prove anything to print it on a listing. So it tells you nothing about whether a piece will still be wearable in a year.

Here is what to check instead. Three questions, what a good answer sounds like, and the answer that means you should close the tab. It works on any brand — including this one.

Step One

Ask what the base metal is — by name.

Plating is a surface. Every surface wears. The moment it wears through, your skin is in contact with whatever is underneath, and that is what actually causes reactions. The base metal is the only part that is permanent.

“What is the base metal underneath the plating?”
A good answer
316L stainless steel · solid gold 14k+ · titanium · niobium · platinum. A specific, named metal.
Walk away if
They say “alloy”, “zinc alloy”, or “brass base” — or the listing only ever describes the coating. If a seller can name the plating but not the base, the base is the part they would rather you did not think about.
Step Two

Ask how the coating is applied — and how long it is rated to last.

This is where the law is unexpectedly useful. Under the EU rules on nickel, a coating on skin-contact jewelry only counts if it keeps nickel release under the limit for at least two years of normal wear. Read that again: a finish that fades in six months was never compliant in the first place.

Ask this
“Is it electroplated or PVD? And how long is the finish guaranteed for?”
A good answer
A named process and a warranty with a number of years attached to it. The warranty is the real answer — it is the only part that costs them money if they are wrong.
Walk away if
You get “18k gold plated” and nothing else. A thickness figure with no warranty behind it is just a number on a page.
Step Three

Ask for the nickel release rate — not the words “nickel free”.

There is an actual measurement here, and it is not a slogan. The EU limits are 0.2 µg/cm² per week for anything that goes through a piercing, and 0.5 µg/cm² per week for jewelry in prolonged contact with skin.

Ask this
“Is it tested against the REACH nickel limit?”
A good answer
Either a straight yes with the standard named — or, better, honesty: 316L surgical steel does contain nickel (roughly 10–14%). It is locked into the alloy, so release is very low and it normally passes comfortably. A brand that says that out loud is a brand that read the spec.
Walk away if
A steel product advertised as “100% nickel free”. That is not a stricter product — it is a brand that either has not read the spec or is hoping you have not.

Four things you can see or feel right now.

A green or grey mark on your skin
Copper in the base metal is reaching you. The coating is gone.
Itch or redness only where the metal sits, worse when you sweat
The classic nickel pattern.
The colour looks patchy, or turns warm at edges and high-wear spots
Plating is wearing through. Stop wearing it against skin.
A magnet grabs it firmly
Likely a cheap steel or iron core. 316L is at most weakly magnetic.
